Booked for Murder
R.J. Blain
(Vigilante Magical Librarians #1)
Publication date: August 18th 2020
Genres: Adult, Urban Fantasy

Life as a bodyguard and driver for the rich, famous, and powerful is dangerous on a good day, and after sustaining a crippling injury while on duty, Janette’s left with few options. Having signed a ‘for life’ contract but unable to work, she uses her skills to disappear.

Her new life as a librarian suits her. Nobody cares she limps and sometimes requires a cane to walk. She’s wanted for her knowledge, not her lethal magic. She’s surrounded by books, a woman’s best friend.

But when her former employer’s best friend is murdered on the steps of her library, old loyalties and secrets might destroy her—or set her free.

Teaming up with her co-workers to find the killer might keep her from being booked for murder, but unless she’s careful, she’ll find out exactly how far her ex-boss will go to reclaim what is rightfully his.

Her. For life.

My review:

When I read the description of this book I couldn't sign up to be on the blog tour fast enough. As a librarian I'll read anything with the word library in the description and this book started with a bang... a real one. As a "damaged" ex-bodyguard Janette has settled into her role as a librarian at a branch of the New York public Library. Between Janette, her cat, the verbal sparring matches with Beatrice, and mysterious Mr. Bradley Hampton, this book set us up to fall neck deep into a murder mystery. I'm not sure I would go so far as to call this a "cozy mystery" with the rather brutal murder (yes there were details) our story centered around, but I read this during a rainy weekend and I wasn't disappointed.

Along with a mystery, this book brings us an Urban Fantasy full of characters with a host of abilities from exsanguination to telekinesis living and working in New York City. Talk of abilities and magic is peppered throughout the books along with the set up for the plot and introduction to characters so it admittedly took some time to organize everything in my mind, but once we had all the details, keeping it all straight was a breeze.

I have to say there were a few moments when the book dragged along a bit, Janelle's quips with the characters surrounding her were a ton of fun and made for a great light read. I suggest this book for anyone who loves mystery, urban fantasy, sassy leading ladies (my fav!), and a book to fall into. I'll be keeping my eyes peeled for book two!
